Future Greenway Council meetings

August 3, 2016        Foley Senior Residences, Mattapan
September 7, 2016  Milton Yacht Club, Milton
October 6, 2016       District E-18 Police Station, Hyde Park

November 2, 2016   Port Norfolk Yacht Club, Dorchester

Along the Trail:

Port Norfolk
Port Norfolk Park was turned over to the DCR at the end of June. Although we probably won't be able to go into it for a while as the DCR makes sure it is complete and the grass grows in, we will have a walking tour around it before the start of our July 6 meeting at the Port Norfolk Yacht Club.

Dorchester
A second public meeting on the reconstruction of Morrissey Blvd., which includes a significant segment of the Neponset Trail was supposed to happen in May, but no date has been publicized yet.  Supporters of green space along the highway and bicycle and pedestrian access need to attend this series of meetings.
The segment from Victory Rd. north to Morrissey Blvd., which bypasses the Southeast Expressway exit ramp, is scheduled to be fully designed by the end of 2016, but the legislature needs to designate money to build it.
The segment between Tenean Beach and Victory Rd. is owned by the Mass. Department of Transportation as frontage for the Southeast Expressway. Coordination between state agencies is still needed.

Mattapan
The Harvest River Bridge which will carry the Neponset Trail bridge over the Neponset River was installed on June 30. The "missing mile" of the trail between Central Ave. in Milton and Blue Hill Ave. in Mattapan is scheculed to be complete by the end of the 2016 construction year. The Dorchester Reporter covered the installation.

Hyde Park

The Hyde Park Neponset River Clean-up this year will be Saturday, September 24.  The planning meetings have already begun.  If anyone would like to be captain of one of this year’s clean-up sections (TBD) along the river, please let Martha McDonough know.  This will involve some pre-clean-up visits to that section and having input into what your needs will be as for supplies, equipment, and number of volunteers needed for that day.

Events Last Month

Sunday, June 16:
Girlz Roll Tour of Mattapan's Urban Wilds

From Walker Playground, Mildred Ave. at Norfolk St., we toured 7 of Mattapan's open spaces, which are larger and more wild than you might expect!
Here's Shavel'le Olivier hiking through the Gladeside Urban Wild, a few hundred feet from her house.

Sunday, June 24:
Ice Cream Sunday Tour I

We investigated the indigenous ice creams of the Lower Neponset Valley from Fields Corner to Cleary Square and back. Sponsored by the Boston Bikes Advisory Group, this was the first of three monthly rides to ice cream.
Here's Dave Mabel, who founded Ice Cream Smith 40 years ago, dishing it out (though his kids now own the place).
